SUMMARY

The Communications Specialist elicits, develops and presents OECS led content for regional, national and international news across print, radio, television and on-line media. Under OECS’ editorial standards, the Communications Specialist crafts articles and multimedia content for internal and external audiences that effectively supports the mandate of the OECS. Working closely with the Webmaster / Digital Communications Specialist, articles and multimedia content will be populated on the OECS Website and prepared for mass dissemination through the organisation’s e-newsletter and Client Relationship Management (CRM) system.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Ability to grasp complex development and advocacy issues to develop compelling, newsworthy, politically sensitive articles, feature stories, press releases, statements, opinion pieces and multimedia content on a tight deadline;

Provide communications expertise and execution support to departments/functions within the organisation for their initiatives;

Work closely with individual OECS Commission Units / Heads and the Webmaster / Digital Specialist to elicit and develop content, often with fast turnaround time. This includes content writing, video editing and graphic design;

Create messaging; review and edit content of communications materials to ensure content meets established communications standards and guidelines before publication;

Form part of the Editorial Management Team for the OECS Business Focus Magazine. Review, suggest, solicit and vet articles for publication;

 

 

Keep communications fresh, creative, and engaging;

 

Manage the on-line newsroom and upon request distribute media releases through the integrated Client Relationship Management (CRM);

 

Ability to engage with (and contribute to) campaign strategies, and maintain a good understanding of the political nuances associated with effective messaging;

 

Promote and assist with planning, coordinating and promoting teammate events.

 

Work collaboratively with the OECS Commission Units to develop content for internal and external communications relevant to their areas;

 

Provide communications support for meetings and other events as they arise;

 

Assist in communications and meeting activities as determined by leadership; and

 

Develop and maintain good relationships with key journalists and media contacts.

 

Carry out other related duties as may be required or assigned from time to time by the Head of the Communications Unit and or the Director of Corporate Services.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

 

The successful applicant will be required to have:

 

Bachelor’s or Master's degree in communications, marketing or a related field of study strongly preferred.

 

3 or more years professional business experience required.

 

Proven ability to develop and successfully implement communications strategies.

 

Strong writing, editing, proofreading, layout and design, professional printing/publishing skills are essential, including ability to present concepts verbally.

 

Videography and photography skills are an asset.

 

Excellent organisational and planning skills. Superior project management and time management skills.

 

A wide degree of creativity and latitude.

 

Strong knowledge and understanding of current trends in digital media/social media and technologies influencing earned media.

 

Self-motivated with a positive and professional approach to work.

 

Outstanding interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively in a team environment. Strong attention to detail.

 

Demonstrated organisational and time management skills.

 

Strong to expert level of knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including PowerPoint. Functional knowledge of French, Spanish or Dutch is an asset.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

 

The position is on a fixed-term subject to satisfactory annual reviews. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and exempt from income taxes. In addition to the basic salary, the post attracts other allowances. The incumbent will be eligible for membership in the Organisation’s non-contributory Group Health and Life Insurance Scheme. Reasonable location expenses will be reimbursed where applicable.
