Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque was this morning briefed by Commonwealth Secretary-General Baroness Patricia Scotland on the issues before this week's Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2018 (CHOGM 2018).
A number of CARICOM Member States are part of the community of 53 nations which are participating in the CHOGM, being held under the theme "Towards a Common Future".
The Meeting will have among its areas of focus, building the resilience of small and vulnerable states to deal with the effects of climate change and other global crises. It is expected to highlight the need for urgent action to reduce vulnerability and increase resilience, as the impact of climate change can push more people into poverty.
Boosting trade and investment, cooperation across security challenges, and promoting good governance are among the other main areas of focus.
The week-long event began on Monday with the Commonwealth Business Forum, People's Forum, Women's Forum, and Youth Forum. The Official Opening Ceremony takes place on Thursday and the Commonwealth Heads of Government will hold the Leaders Retreat on Friday.
